NLC Rallies Workers for Peaceful Procession in Support of Ajaero as he honours police invitation

In response to what it views as baseless charges against its President, Joe Ajaero, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on workers nationwide to participate in a peaceful prayer procession. This event is scheduled for August 29th, 2024, following a summons by the police for Ajaero to answer accusations including criminal conspiracy and cybercrime.

The NLC’s General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, announced the procession in a letter addressed to all affiliates and state councils. He emphasized that the gathering is a show of solidarity against what the NLC perceives as an attempt to intimidate its leadership and silence the voice of Nigerian workers. The organization urges its members to remain peaceful and orderly during the march, which will take place at the NLC National Headquarters in Abuja, as well as at various state secretariats across the country.

Nationwide Mobilization for Justice

Ugboaja’s message also highlights the potential consequences if Ajaero is detained during his interaction with the police. He warned that the NLC would initiate an indefinite strike if such an outcome occurs, urging workers to stand united in defending civil rights and the integrity of the labour movement. The procession is not just a demonstration of support for Ajaero but also a broader statement against the perceived misuse of power to suppress the labor force in Nigeria.
