In a significant achievement for Nigeria’s academic community, 82 exceptional Nigerians have been awarded the prestigious Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships by the British Government. These scholarships will allow the recipients to pursue a wide range of master’s and PhD programs in the United Kingdom in 2024, marking a pivotal moment in their educational and professional journeys.
This year, 32 scholars have been selected for the Chevening Scholarships, while 50 have secured the Commonwealth Scholarships. Pre-Departure Ceremonies Highlight the Journey Ahead
To honor the scholars, a pre-departure ceremony was held in Abuja, with another scheduled to take place in Lagos next week. The Abuja event was graced by the British Deputy High Commissioner, Mrs. Gill Lever, who congratulated the recipients and emphasized the significance of their achievement. Mrs. Lever encouraged the scholars to strive for excellence in their studies and to act as ambassadors for Nigeria while in the UK. She highlighted the importance of leveraging the opportunity to expand their knowledge, engage in cultural exchange, and build strong networks that will benefit both Nigeria and the global community.
“I challenge each of you to aim for excellence in your studies, to be great ambassadors for Nigeria in the UK, and to take advantage of every opportunity during your scholarship – through growing your knowledge, enriching cultural exchange, and confident networking – and then bringing those experiences back to Nigeria and doing great things for your country while creating a positive change in this country and the world,” Mrs. Lever stated during her address.
Similarly, the Director of Operations at the British Council Nigeria, Mr. Idowu Akintade, also spoke at the reception, urging the scholars to harness the skills and knowledge they will gain to contribute to Nigeria’s development priorities. He stressed the importance of building a strong network and maintaining the high standards associated with the Commonwealth and Chevening Scholarships.
“We hope the skills and knowledge you gain from this scholarship opportunity prepares you to make a positive impact on the development priorities of Nigeria,” Mr. Akintade said. “I encourage you all to build a strong network and continue to be great ambassadors of the prestigious Commonwealth and Chevening Scholarships.”
