Defence Minister Urges Sokoto Residents to Report Suspicious Lavish Living

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, has called on Sokoto residents to report any suspicious lavish living by unemployed individuals to security agencies. Speaking during a visit to the Sokoto State Governor’s office on Tuesday, Matawalle emphasized the importance of vigilance in identifying potential threats to the state’s security.

Matawalle, who recently relocated to Sokoto alongside the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, on the orders of President Bola Tinubu, highlighted the ongoing efforts to combat banditry in the region. He noted that unemployed individuals flaunting wealth could be informants for bandits, and urged citizens to take action by reporting such cases.

Drawing from his experience as the former governor of Zamfara State, Matawalle underscored the critical role of community involvement in maintaining security. “If you see someone who isn’t employed but is frequently changing cars and spending money lavishly, please do not hesitate to report such a person. They may be informants for bandits,” Matawalle warned.

The Minister’s appeal comes as part of a broader strategy to restore peace and stability in Sokoto and the wider north-west region, which has been plagued by persistent security challenges. “We are here to crush the bad elements in our midst, and by the special grace of God, we will succeed,” Matawalle assured.

Residents of Sokoto are now urged to be more observant and proactive in supporting the government’s efforts to secure the state. By reporting suspicious lavish living, they can help identify and neutralize potential threats, thereby contributing to the ongoing battle against terrorism in the region.
