Labour Party has Appointed Nenadi Usman to Lead Caretaker Committee

In a strategic move to stabilize its leadership, the Labour Party (LP) has named former Finance Minister, Senator Nenadi Usman, as the chairperson of a 29-member caretaker committee. The committee, which includes high-profile members like former Senate Minority Deputy Leader Senator Darlington Nwokocha as secretary, is tasked with organizing leadership elections within 90 days. This temporary body will ensure a smooth transition by overseeing the election of new party executives.

The decision emerged after the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Umuahia, where party leaders resolved to address pressing internal issues. The caretaker committee’s primary focus will be organizing Ward, Local Government, and State Congresses, culminating in a National Convention. The committee will also ensure compliance with the party’s constitution throughout this process.

At the meeting, Abia State Governor Alex Otti emphasized that the current National Working Committee’s tenure had ended in June 2024. He urged party members to prioritize the survival and unity of the Labour Party during this transitional period, instead of focusing on individual positions.

Labour Party National Leader and former Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, also addressed the gathering. He stressed the importance of following constitutional guidelines to safeguard the future of the party, which ranks as Nigeria’s third-largest political force. Obi encouraged full support for the caretaker committee to ensure they achieve their objectives.

In her acceptance speech, Nenadi Usman expressed gratitude to Peter Obi and other party stakeholders for the trust placed in her leadership. She assured members that the committee would carry out its responsibilities diligently and transparently, working toward a stronger and unified party.

This development marks a pivotal moment for the Labour Party as it seeks to resolve internal conflicts and establish a lasting leadership structure that reflects the party’s commitment to progress.
