Surge in Resignations: Nigerian Soldiers Opt for Foreign Armies Amidst Poor Welfare Conditions

Recent reports indicate a significant rise in Nigerian soldiers resigning from their positions to join foreign military forces, including the British and Ukrainian armies. This mass resignation is attributed to poor welfare conditions, inadequate equipment, and a lack of motivation within the Nigerian Army, according to Sahara Reporters.

The situation is particularly dire among the medical corps, with numerous soldiers already resigning and more expected to follow as their applications are processed. Sahara Reporters highlights that these departures reflect widespread dissatisfaction with the Nigerian government’s failure to provide essential support and resources.

An official document obtained by Sahara Reporters confirms that about 27 soldiers from the medical corps have been approved for voluntary discharge, with their resignation set to take effect in early November 2024. This development underscores the ongoing crisis within the Nigerian military, exacerbated by delays in salary payments and bonuses.

The internal memo from the Nigerian Army, also reported by Sahara Reporters, reveals significant delays in the payment of salaries and allowances, further contributing to the dissatisfaction among soldiers. The memo requests patience from personnel as efforts continue to address these financial issues.

This growing trend of resignations not only highlights the urgent need for reforms within the Nigerian Army but also poses a challenge to national security as soldiers seek better opportunities abroad.
