In a significant development, 196 Nigerian soldiers resign from service, citing widespread corruption, low morale, and inadequate welfare within the military. According to sources from Sahara Reporters, these resignations come at a time when Nigeria’s security situation continues to deteriorate, with soldiers expressing frustration over their treatment on the frontlines.

The mass resignation highlights the deep challenges the Nigerian military faces in combating terrorism and insurgency, especially in the northeastern part of the country. Many of the resigning soldiers, drawn from various formations nationwide, are reportedly considering joining foreign armies, such as the British or Ukrainian military forces. The list of 196 soldiers, all junior personnel, was approved by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, with official disengagement dated August 23.

Corruption within the ranks has been a long-standing issue in the Nigerian Army. Numerous soldiers have complained about overstaying in conflict zones like the North-East and being forced to engage in combat under poor conditions. This, coupled with a lack of modern weapons and adequate compensation, has led to growing disillusionment. Low morale among troops has become increasingly evident, and this has reportedly impacted the military’s ability to maintain control over critical areas in the region.

The resignation trend, which is not the first of its kind, underscores the dissatisfaction within the military. Some soldiers have voiced their frustration with inadequate welfare packages and insufficient motivation. These issues, compounded by the ever-present threat of Boko Haram militants, have caused a rift between military personnel and their leadership. One military source, quoted by Sahara Reporters, mentioned that even more soldiers could follow suit in the coming months.

This wave of resignations paints a troubling picture for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and insurgency. As more Nigerian soldiers resign, the capability of the country’s defense apparatus continues to weaken, raising serious concerns about national security.
