Traditional Leaders of Badagry Intervene to Curb Market Price Hikes

Chiefs Lead Effort to Regulate Prices in Agbalata Market, Badagry

In a bold move to control rising costs in Badagry, Lagos, local traditional leaders have taken direct action to regulate food and goods prices at Agbalata Market. The intervention follows directives issued by the Aholu Menu Toyi 1, traditional ruler of Badagry, who disbanded the market committees previously setting prices, emphasizing the need for fair and reasonable pricing.

Representatives of the Akran, led by Chief Michael Onu-Osekan, communicated the price regulation orders during a meeting with market sellers. These changes are expected to relieve residents, many of whom have faced hardship due to inflated costs.

Chief Anthony Oloyede, another senior leader, reinforced the importance of following the Akran’s instructions. “We are here to ensure that food prices align with the directive and that marketers act with compassion,” he remarked, as they monitored compliance.

The move has been well received by some market stakeholders, like Mr. Tunde Hundeyin from the Coconut Sellers Association. However, he urged the chiefs to address the broader issue of fuel prices, which have contributed to the general hike in goods.

Cooperation and Compliance Promised by Market Leaders

Market traders, represented by Chief Solomon Alabi, pledged full cooperation with the chiefs’ directives, committing to abide by the new pricing policies. This decision aims to bring stability to the market, helping residents access affordable goods.

The intervention by Badagry’s traditional leaders comes at a critical time when many Lagosians are struggling with rising living costs, and it is seen as a necessary step toward easing the financial burden on the community.
