Inibehe Effiong: Abacha’s Legacy Haunts Nigeria’s Presidential Villa Amid Ajaero, SERAP Clampdown

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong condemns the government’s actions, likening them to the era of military rule under Abacha.”

Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has raised concerns about the growing authoritarian tendencies of the Nigerian government, asserting that Abacha’s spirit in Nigeria’s Presidential Villa is driving its current actions. His remarks follow the recent arrest of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero and the clampdown on the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Effiong took to social media, stating that the government is resorting to tyranny to mask its failures. He likened the situation to the dictatorship of former military leader General Sani Abacha, claiming that Abacha’s spirit in Nigeria’s Presidential Villa is steering the government’s actions. Effiong called for the immediate release of Ajaero and urged the international community to impose sanctions on those undermining democracy in Nigeria.

He expressed concern over the regime’s increasing reliance on arbitrary force to silence critical voices, further emphasizing that Abacha’s spirit in Nigeria’s Presidential Villa is influencing a return to authoritarianism. According to Effiong, these actions mark a betrayal of the democratic progress Nigeria has fought to achieve, as the government continues its crackdown on opposition voices.
