Peter Obi Urges Tinubu to Curb Government Waste, Cut Governance Costs

Labour Party’s Peter Obi emphasizes the need for Nigerian politicians to lead by example in reducing wasteful spending

In a recent exclusive interview, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to cut governance costs as a measure to curb the growing wastefulness in government spending. Obi emphasized that the Nigerian government’s expenses have ballooned unnecessarily, making it essential for politicians to start making sacrifices.

He noted that while the removal of fuel and electricity subsidies has placed a heavier burden on the populace, the government must now show the people how these savings are being utilized. “If the fuel subsidy is gone and the electricity subsidy is gone, then tell the people where it is going,” Obi insisted.

The former Anambra State governor emphasized the need for politicians to cut governance costs and lead by example. “You cannot ask the people to sacrifice while politicians continue to enjoy their privileges. The people are suffering,” Obi said, pointing out that government wastefulness undermines the public’s trust and sacrifices.

Obi further commented on Nigeria’s rising debt, noting that while borrowing isn’t inherently bad, the borrowed funds must be properly invested in the country’s economy. He drew comparisons with countries like Japan and Singapore, explaining that their large debts were used to fuel development. Obi warned that Nigeria is now the third-largest debtor to the World Bank and may soon climb to the top spot if urgent fiscal reforms are not made.

Stressing the importance of constitutional governance, Obi highlighted that the Nigerian constitution should dictate the number of ministers and the scope of their responsibilities, suggesting that every governmental action must be measurable and purposeful. He reiterated that competent leadership, focused on cutting governance costs, is crucial to the country’s progress.

Obi concluded by stating that Nigeria’s problem lies not with the country itself but with its political leaders, himself included. He called for greater integrity, transparency, and adherence to the constitution, urging the government to prioritize resources for key development areas that will have a meaningful impact on the lives of Nigerians.
