Presidency Likens Peter Obi to Donald Trump, Citing Similarities

The Nigerian presidency compares Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate, to former US president Donald Trump

In a statement that has sparked widespread conversation, the Nigerian presidency has drawn a comparison between Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, and former United States President Donald Trump. According to the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Bola Tinubu, Temitope Ajayi, Peter Obi compared to Trump highlights some notable similarities between the two political figures.

Ajayi explained that Peter Obi compared to Trump is not only based on their political campaigns but also on their approach to describing their respective countries. He noted that both politicians have employed critical and often negative rhetoric as part of their strategy to energize their base of supporters.

Ajayi made these comments on X (formerly Twitter), responding to the recent U.S. presidential debate between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. He emphasized that Harris had skillfully handled Trump’s weaknesses during the debate, showcasing her ability to navigate his unpredictable tactics.

“Peter Obi compared to Trump is an apt description,” Ajayi remarked. “Like Trump, Obi uses some of the most negative epithets to describe the country he seeks to lead, riling up his supporters in the process.” He also praised Harris for her performance in the debate, claiming she outmaneuvered Trump and left a lasting impression on viewers.

Ajayi concluded by noting that both Trump and Obi face significant scrutiny for their claims, with fact-checkers often disputing their statements in public discourse.
