Fire Engulfs Oko Baba Plank Market in Lagos

A devastating fire broke out on Sunday at the Oko Baba plank market in Ebute Metta, Lagos, destroying large sections of the market, including nearby shanties. Emergency responders, including officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), are currently battling the flames and conducting a search and rescue operation at the site.

Eyewitness Accounts and Emergency Response

The fire was first reported by a social media user, Adedeji Olalekan, tweeting under the handle #Stylomedia, who posted, “Okobaba Street is on fire now, all the shanties are burning.” This report quickly garnered attention, and responders were deployed to the scene. LASEMA’s spokesperson, Nosa Okunbor, confirmed that teams from LASEMA’s Response Unit and the Fire Service were at the location, working tirelessly to contain the blaze and ensure the safety of those in the area.

The Scale of the Damage

Although the full extent of the damage is yet to be determined, early reports suggest that the fire has destroyed a significant portion of the plank market, known for its dense wooden structures and high fire risk. The shanties nearby have also been severely affected. Residents and traders are anxiously waiting for updates as the emergency teams continue their work.

Further details on the cause of the fire and the number of casualties, if any, will be provided as the situation develops.
