BoT Declares Peaceful Meeting with National Assembly Caucus Amidst PDP Crisis

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adolphus Wabara, has confirmed that the recent meeting between the BoT and the PDP National Assembly caucus was conducted in a peaceful manner. This comes as the party continues to grapple with internal disputes that have intensified since the 2023 elections.

Wabara, a former Senate President, made the remarks while speaking with journalists in Abuja following the closed-door session held on Thursday, September 19, 2024. He emphasized that the meeting, aimed at addressing the party’s ongoing issues, went smoothly. “We met with the National Caucus, and as you can see, the meeting was peaceful,” he stated.

The PDP has been embroiled in internal conflicts, with criticisms being leveled against the Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, for not taking more decisive actions to reform the party. The situation has been further complicated by disagreements involving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara, and members of the PDP Governors Forum over the party’s structure and direction.

In recent days, the BoT has been actively engaged in meetings with key party figures in an attempt to calm tensions. Earlier in the week, Wabara, along with BoT Secretary Senator Ahmed Makarfi and other members, held a private meeting with Wike in Abuja. Additionally, the BoT met with the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, to discuss the party’s challenges.

The Thursday meeting between the BoT and the National Assembly caucus took place at the PDP’s Legacy House in Abuja, with key attendees including House Minority Leader Hon. Chinda Kingsley, Senate Deputy Minority Leader Senator Lere Oyewumi, House Minority Whip Hon. Ali Isa JC, and other notable lawmakers.

The meeting was convened by the BoT to gauge the sentiment of the PDP caucus in the National Assembly regarding the party’s current issues, with the intention of recommending solutions and urging unity within the party.
