Akpata Expresses Readiness to Serve in Any Capacity for a Better Nigeria

Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party’s (LP) candidate in the recent Edo State governorship election, expressed his dissatisfaction with the election process, highlighting widespread vote-buying allegedly facilitated by the two dominant political parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Despite these challenges, Akpata affirmed his commitment to serving Nigeria and Edo State in any capacity that would lead to a better future for the people.

Speaking at a press conference, Akpata stated that the election, held on September 21, 2024, lacked integrity, describing it as a transactional process rather than a legitimate election. He pointed out that the low voter turnout enabled the two leading parties to easily dominate the polls by purchasing votes. While there was no evidence of traditional election-day malpractices like ballot box snatching, he noted the election was marred by voter intimidation and falsified results.

Akpata lamented that some Labour Party members and agents were complicit in the vote-buying scheme, selling out their futures for a meager price. He also criticized the growing influence of political “godfathers” and surrogate governors who exert undue control over governance in the state.

Reflecting on the election’s outcome, Akpata said, “What happened on September 21 wasn’t an election but a transaction. It was a competition where both the APC and PDP bought votes, as confirmed by YIAGA Africa, a domestic observer group. This practice, just as damaging as ballot stuffing, disenfranchised Edo citizens.”

When asked about potential legal actions, Akpata revealed that the election results are being examined by legal experts for possible next steps. He also addressed speculations about running for a National Assembly seat in 2027, emphasizing that his focus is on service, not personal ambition. “If I am called to serve in any capacity, I will take on the task, whether as a local government official, senator, or in any other role that helps rebuild this country,” he said.

Commendations and Reflections from Other Candidates

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Engr. Derek Izedomwen, commended the peaceful conduct of the election while expressing concerns over reports of vote-buying and irregularities, particularly in Edo North. He urged that any grievances be addressed through legal channels, maintaining that the democratic process thrives on peaceful resolution of disputes.

Despite the challenges, Izedomwen noted that the ADC’s campaign significantly boosted the party’s visibility, and their message of hope and progress resonated with many voters. He emphasized the need for continued efforts to perfect the democratic process and eliminate the exploitation of poverty during elections.

A Beacon of Hope for Edo State

Omo Osagie, a former House of Representatives candidate, expressed optimism that the victory of the governor-elect, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, and his running mate, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, would lead to a better Edo State. He praised the unity within their campaign team, attributing their success to this collaborative effort.

Similarly, the Edo Professionals Alliance (EPA) welcomed the new leadership and expressed confidence in their ability to bring about positive changes in education, healthcare, and economic development. They pledged their support and partnership to ensure the success of the new administration.

The election marked a pivotal moment for Edo State, and while the process was not without its flaws, there remains hope for progress and a brighter future under the new leadership.
