A Mallorca fan has been handed a one-year prison sentence and a three-year stadium ban for racially abusing former Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze and Real Madrid’s star player Vinicius Junior. The fan’s actions, described as racially motivated, led to charges of moral integrity violations, with Real Madrid confirming the conviction.
The incidents occurred in 2023 during two separate La Liga matches. In February, the fan targeted Vinicius during Real Madrid’s 1-0 loss at Mallorca’s Son Moix stadium. Weeks later, he hurled racist insults at Chukwueze, who was then playing for Villarreal before his transfer to AC Milan.
Although sentenced to prison, the fan’s term was suspended after he expressed remorse, issued a formal apology to Vinicius, and completed an equality and anti-discrimination program. This case is part of a growing crackdown on racism in football, following two other convictions for similar offenses in recent months.
Racism in football has come under increasing scrutiny, with players and clubs calling for tougher sanctions. Vinicius Junior himself has been vocal on the issue, recently urging FIFA to reconsider Spain’s hosting rights for the 2030 World Cup in light of the country’s ongoing struggles with racial discrimination in the sport.
This conviction sends a clear message that racial abuse will not be tolerated in football, as global sports organizations intensify efforts to combat racism on and off the pitch.
