EFCC Conducts Midnight Raids on Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto Hostels, Arrests Several Students

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) launched a pre-dawn operation in Sokoto, leading to multiple student arrests at private hostels near Usmanu Danfodiyo University.

In a covert operation early Saturday morning, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) launched a midnight raid on university hostels, targeting private accommodations at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS). The operation took place in the Kwakwalawa and Gidan Yaro communities, resulting in the arrest of numerous students.

Students living in the affected areas reported that the EFCC operatives stormed their hostels around 4 a.m., arresting several individuals without clear distinctions. “They entered suddenly, and we didn’t know what was happening,” one student shared. “It felt like a kidnapping incident at first, but we later realized it was an EFCC midnight raid on university hostels.”

This incident mirrors a previous raid earlier this year at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), where EFCC agents arrested students in the early morning hours. In that case, officials from the Benin Zonal office of the commission carried out a similar pre-dawn raid, arresting students amid accusations of property destruction and assault.

As of now, the EFCC has not released an official statement regarding the recent Sokoto operation or the charges against the arrested students. Despite the silence, the students and their families remain concerned about the nature of the EFCC midnight raid on university hostels and its potential consequences.

The EFCC’s growing reliance on early-morning operations continues to spark debates about its approach to combating financial crimes among students, raising questions about procedural fairness and transparency.
