Labour Party Faces Major Setback as Lawmakers Defect to APC Amid Leadership Crisis

The Labour Party leadership crisis in Cross River State has intensified, dealing another blow to the party as Brian Odey, a prominent lawmaker representing Yala State Constituency 1 in the House of Assembly, officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This defection is the latest in a string of losses for the Labour Party, which continues to struggle amid internal leadership disputes.

Over the weekend, the Labour Party leadership crisis worsened when Brian Odey, along with other defectors, was formally received by the ruling APC in a grand ceremony. Odey’s defection took place at Yahe Ward in Yala Local Government Area, further solidifying the APC’s position in the region.

Both factions of the Labour Party, led by Ogar Osim and John Ushie, are still contesting leadership claims but have expressed their readiness to field candidates for the upcoming council elections on October 25, 2024. Despite these efforts, the Labour Party leadership crisis has weakened the party, with another key lawmaker, Martins Achadu of Yala 2 State Constituency, also defecting to the APC at Ijiraga Ward.

The Speaker of the House of Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, welcomed the defectors, including Odey and Achadu, and described their move as a significant boost for the APC. According to Ayambem, their experience and commitment to their constituents will contribute to the continued growth and success of the APC. He also referred to Odey’s decision to join the party as a personal victory amidst the ongoing Labour Party leadership crisis.
