My rape ordeal in Nigerian Army making other female victims contact me – Discharged soldier Ruth

…….A Brave Soldier’s Stand: Speaking Out Against Harassment in the Nigerian Army

Ruth Ogunleye, a former Nigerian Army soldier, has come forward with a story of courage, recounting her experience of alleged harassment by a senior officer during her time in service. By sharing her ordeal, she has ignited a conversation and provided a voice to others who have faced similar challenges but remained silent out of fear.

The former soldier, who served in the Medical Corps at the Nigerian Army Cantonment Medical Centre, Lagos, in 2022, faced persistent advances from a senior officer. Despite repeatedly declining his offers, which included gifts and promises of career favors, she found herself in a vulnerable position as his behavior escalated.

Facing Unwanted Advances and Retaliation

Ruth’s refusal to accept her superior’s inappropriate advances marked the beginning of a challenging chapter in her career. On several occasions, she was pressured into meetings where her superior attempted to sway her with promises of financial support and career advancement in exchange for an intimate relationship. Ruth stood her ground, citing military regulations that strictly forbid such relationships between officers and their subordinates.

Her resistance to the unwanted advances led to retaliatory actions from the officer, who began assigning her excessive and unnecessary duties as a form of punishment.

A Struggle for Justice

Feeling trapped and mistreated, Ruth sought help through official military channels. She filed several complaints to bring the issue to the attention of her superiors, hoping for intervention. However, her attempts were largely ignored, leaving her without support. Instead of receiving justice, Ruth was met with indifference, and her situation remained unchanged.

Her pleas for a resolution continued as she reached out to the Nigerian Army Legal Service, filing a formal complaint. Unfortunately, the case was not given the thorough attention it deserved, and the opportunity for an investigation was missed.

A Bold Step Toward Advocacy

Determined to not let her story go untold, Ruth took her case to the public. In January 2024, she shared her experience on social media, and her story quickly resonated with many. Other women, both in and out of the military, reached out to her, sharing their own stories of harassment and discrimination. Ruth’s bravery in going public sparked an important conversation about the treatment of women in the armed forces and beyond.

The response was overwhelming. While many of the women who contacted her chose to remain anonymous, they expressed gratitude for her courage, explaining how her decision to speak up had inspired them to seek justice in their own situations.

Support and Moving Forward

Ruth’s courage caught the attention of key figures, including Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs, who personally offered her support. With medical evaluations confirming her mental and physical health, Ruth was encouraged to take control of her future by applying for voluntary discharge from the military.

The Nigerian Army later granted Ruth a medical discharge, allowing her to leave with her dignity intact and ensuring her access to pension benefits after years of service. While her fight for justice within the military did not yield immediate results, Ruth’s decision to share her experience created an avenue for others to voice their concerns.

Inspiring a Movement of Voices

Ruth Ogunleye’s story is more than just a personal battle; it’s a testament to the strength of one woman’s resolve in the face of adversity. Through her bravery, she has created a platform for others who have been silenced to find their voice. Although challenges remain for those seeking justice in similar circumstances, Ruth’s story has brought light to the need for better support systems within the military.

Her story continues to inspire, as more women who have faced harassment in the armed forces and other institutions take steps toward speaking out. Ruth’s journey proves that even in the most difficult situations, a single voice can make a difference and ignite change.
