Senator Ndume Decries Rampant Corruption in Nigeria’s Political Class

Senator Ali Ndume highlights corruption’s impact, calls for new laws to combat unexplained wealth in Nigeria

Corruption in Nigeria’s political system has long been a topic of concern, but Senator Ali Ndume is sounding the alarm on the extent of the problem. According to the senator, a significant number of politicians in the country engage in corrupt practices, flaunting sudden and unexplained wealth. “It is only in this country that somebody had no money yesterday or last week, but the following week, he buys 10 cars, buys jets, and his family will celebrate with him,” Ndume lamented.

The senator pointed out that corruption in Nigeria’s political system remains unchecked due to the absence of effective legislation. He emphasized that despite being a pervasive issue, there is still no law that can either proactively or reactively address corruption. “Our major challenge in this country is corruption,” he stated, noting that unless a politician is God-fearing, they are often drawn into corrupt practices.

Ndume expressed his frustration that individuals who accumulate wealth through dubious means often walk freely and are even celebrated. In Nigeria’s political system, this level of impunity fuels more corruption as the law remains powerless against unexplained wealth. He further criticized the absence of an “unexplained wealth act” or any executive order that could hold politicians accountable for their sudden riches.

Aside from corruption, Senator Ndume also drew attention to the widespread hunger in Nigeria. He observed that while the country is blessed with vast arable land, only a small fraction—less than five percent—is currently being cultivated. This lack of focus on agriculture compounds the problems within Nigeria’s political system, as corruption diverts resources away from sectors that could alleviate poverty and hunger.

In conclusion, Senator Ndume’s call for stricter laws against corruption and unexplained wealth is a clarion call for change. Without reforms, corruption in Nigeria’s political system will continue to thrive, leaving the nation’s potential untapped and its citizens struggling.
