PDP Urges Rivers People to Assert Their Right to Vote in Local Government Elections, Warns Police Against Interference

On October 5, 2024, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the people of Rivers State to exercise their democratic right by voting in the upcoming Rivers Local Government Elections. The party encourages citizens to come out in large numbers and make their voices heard, emphasizing that participation in local governance is an essential constitutional right that cannot be taken away by any group or authority.

In a statement signed by Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary, the PDP firmly believes that the responsibility for overseeing democratic processes within Rivers State lies with the people, and this includes their full involvement in the Rivers Local Government Elections. According to the party, no person or organization has the authority to hinder the participation of the people in this crucial electoral process.

Moreover, the party highlights that both the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) and the people are prepared for the elections. The Supreme Court has affirmed the readiness for the election, and the law, including Section 84(15) of the Electoral Act, 2022, clearly states that no court has the power to halt elections.

In a strong statement, the PDP condemned any attempt by the police, allegedly influenced by the APC, to disrupt the Rivers Local Government Elections. Reports of police operatives invading RSIEC facilities with the aim of preventing the election are viewed as a threat to democracy and the rule of law. However, the people of Rivers State have remained resolute in defending their right to vote.

The PDP further called on Nigerians and the international community to hold the APC and the Inspector General of Police accountable if there is any breakdown of law and order during the elections. The PDP urges the police to ensure a secure and conducive environment for the Rivers Local Government Elections, urging professionalism and respect for democratic processes.

Finally, the PDP commended the courage and commitment of the people of Rivers State in standing up for their right to elect their leaders at the local government level. The party reaffirmed its support for the Rivers State government and its citizens in their pursuit of a peaceful and lawful election process.
