Otti Vows Full Implementation of Abia Panel’s Recommendations on Government Property Recovery

Governor Otti extends the Judicial Panel of Inquiry’s mandate to ensure comprehensive recovery of government assets and funds in Abia State

Abia government property recovery efforts are set to intensify as Governor Alex Otti commits to fully implementing the recommendations from the Judicial Panel of Inquiry on the Recovery of Government Properties, Funds, and Related Matters. The governor made this pledge after receiving the panel’s final report at Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South LGA.

In a move to ensure no stone is left unturned, Otti approved an extension of the panel’s mandate to address petitions that have not yet been investigated. This decision, according to the governor, is to avoid prematurely concluding the work of the panel before thoroughly examining all relevant issues.

Having earlier received the panel’s interim report, Governor Otti expressed confidence in the final report, stating that it is just as detailed and comprehensive. He applauded the Judicial Panel for standing firm in the face of attempts to undermine their efforts, particularly thanking the Chair, Justice Florence Duruoha Igwe, and her team for their dedication.

“I can assure you that we are going to take this report very seriously, and we are going to implement it to the letter,” Otti said. “None of your recommendations will be swept under the carpet.”

The Abia government property recovery panel, led by Justice Igwe, has made significant strides, with some individuals who illegally acquired government assets already returning them. Governor Otti urged those who have not yet complied to do so, warning that legal action would be taken against defaulters.

Earlier, while submitting the three-volume final report, Justice Igwe revealed that the panel had received 350 petitions and memoranda and conducted 99 sittings. The panel’s investigations covered various areas including markets, land, employment, contracts, and movable properties. She urged the governor to ensure swift implementation of the report’s recommendations to bring about justice and accountability.

The Abia government property recovery initiative has already seen the return of several assets, including vehicles and a bus for a tertiary institution. As Governor Otti continues to push for transparency and restitution, residents of Abia State are hopeful for a renewed sense of accountability in governance.
