PDP in Rivers State: BoT Chair Wabara Expresses Regret Over Local Government Election Defeat

PDP Board of Trustees Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, laments the party’s poor performance in Rivers LG polls, attributing the loss to internal conflicts

The recent PDP’s loss in Rivers State has sparked deep concerns within the party’s leadership, with Senator Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, voicing his disappointment over the outcome of the local government elections held on October 5. Despite the party’s long-standing dominance in the state since 1999, the PDP suffered a significant blow, losing control of key grassroots structures to a lesser-known political group. Wabara attributes this defeat to internal divisions and a failure to heed critical advice on resolving the political crisis in Rivers.

Reflecting on PDP’s loss in Rivers State, Wabara emphasized that the party’s downfall was self-inflicted, citing ongoing internal feuds and disregard for wise counsel as primary reasons for their poor performance in the local government polls. As Governor Siminalayi Fubara swore in the 23 new local government chairmen, Wabara expressed regret that the party, which had maintained an unshaken grip on Rivers politics for decades, was now facing such a dramatic setback.

Wabara noted that PDP’s loss in Rivers State marks a pivotal moment in the party’s history, as this is one of the rare occasions where the ruling party and the governor’s own political base have lost control of the grassroots to a rival. He warned that the party’s inability to resolve internal conflicts could further jeopardize its future standing in the state and beyond.
