Federal High Court Reinstates Julius Abure as Labour Party National Chairman

On Tuesday, an Abuja Federal High Court reinstated Julius Abure as the legitimate National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), solidifying his leadership within the party.

The court upheld the validity of the Labour Party’s 2024 national convention, which took place in Nnewi. During this convention, Abure was re-elected as chairman. According to the ruling, the convention adhered strictly to the legal and constitutional guidelines governing party processes in Nigeria.

The judgment was shared through a press release by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh. In the statement, Justice Emeka Nwite, who presided over the case, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize Abure’s leadership. The electoral body was also directed to extend all necessary privileges to the Labour Party’s National Working Committee under his stewardship.

Previously, INEC had refused to acknowledge Abure as the National Chairman, claiming that the March 2024 convention violated both the Nigerian Constitution and the Electoral Act. The Commission questioned the legality of the leadership Abure had assumed after his re-election.

However, the court’s decision now effectively restores Abure’s authority, and INEC is expected to comply with the directives, thus ending the dispute over the Labour Party’s leadership.
