Veteran Actress Yetunde Wunmi Opens Up About Losing Her Marriage and Child Due to Acting Career

Veteran actress Yetunde Wunmi lost her marriage and child to acting, a revelation she shared in an emotional interview with BBC Yorùbá. Wunmi, whose journey into the entertainment industry began in 1982, explained how her passion for acting caused personal sacrifices, including the end of her marriage. Her love for the craft, which started after meeting legendary filmmaker Adeyemi Afolayan, was both a blessing and a challenge.

Reflecting on her early career, Yetunde Wunmi expressed that her dedication to the theatre world ultimately led to the breakdown of her marriage. Despite the difficulties, Wunmi emphasized that she has no regrets and believes that God’s grace has guided her through the highs and lows of her journey.

Tragically, the actress also lost her young child while pursuing her acting career. Wunmi recounted how she joined a theatre group with her 41-day-old baby but neglected to inform her husband about the traveling performances. As her commitment to acting deepened, her child’s health deteriorated, leading to a devastating loss a year and 10 days later. Wunmi describes this event as one of the most painful memories of her life, one that continues to weigh heavily on her heart.

Even though Yetunde Wunmi lost her marriage and child to acting, she remains thankful for the opportunities her career has brought and remains proud of her contributions to the Nigerian theatre industry.
