Things to know before converting your petrol vehicle to CNG

With the removal of fuel subsidies in Nigeria, many vehicle owners are considering switching to compressed natural gas (CNG) as a more cost-effective alternative. On August 19, 2023, President Bola Tinubu launched the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) to encourage this transition. The government has been setting up CNG conversion centers across the country and introduced the “Transport Fare Drop Programme” to help reduce commuting costs. Additionally, a new website allows vehicle owners to convert their petrol vehicles to CNG and offers a pay-later option.

Here are five important things to know before converting your petrol vehicle to CNG:

1. Not All Vehicles Are Suitable for Conversion

While many petrol-powered cars can switch to CNG, not every engine is ideal for the conversion. Passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, and some buses can be converted, but high-performance or older engines may require special attention. Generally, vehicles under 10 years old with modern systems are more compatible with CNG. High-powered or turbocharged engines may not be suitable for conversion. Diesel engines, however, can only partially switch to CNG and run on a 50/50 mix of diesel and CNG.

2. Vehicle Age and Condition Are Important

The age and condition of your vehicle are significant factors in determining if it can be converted to CNG. Cars that are in good condition and less than 10 years old are usually better candidates. If your vehicle has engine issues or is nearing the end of its lifespan, it may struggle with the demands of a CNG system. It’s advisable to have a certified mechanic inspect your vehicle before deciding on conversion.

3. Check Emission Standards

Switching to CNG offers environmental benefits by lowering emissions. However, Nigerian vehicles must meet certain emission standards to be eligible for conversion. Older cars that do not comply with these standards may not qualify. It’s essential to consult a conversion specialist to determine if your vehicle meets the necessary regulations.

4. Choose the Right Conversion Kit

There are two main types of CNG conversion kits: Sequential and Venturi. Sequential kits, which inject CNG directly into the intake manifold, are more efficient and work well with newer cars. Venturi kits are simpler, more affordable, and ideal for older vehicles, though they may not deliver the same level of performance. Sequential kits are typically used in vehicles with advanced electronic systems, while Venturi kits are more suitable for simpler engines and are budget-friendly.

5. Use a Certified Conversion Center

For safety and efficiency, it’s crucial to have your CNG system installed by a certified conversion center. These centers have trained technicians who follow safety protocols, ensuring proper installation. Some CNG filling stations also serve as conversion centers. Companies like NIPCO Plc, Bovas, Axxela, and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited are partnering with the PCNGI to provide reliable conversion services.
