Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed Meets Embattled PDP Chair, Comments on Party’s Leadership Crisis

Bala Mohammed, the Chairperson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, has expressed optimism about the party’s ability to overcome its current leadership crisis. His remarks came during a meeting on Friday with Umar Damagum, the embattled Acting National Chairperson of the PDP.

The meeting, held at the Bauchi State Government House, was attended by North-east PDP chairpersons. Governor Mohammed acknowledged the party’s significant challenges but emphasized his commitment to resolving them alongside other governors. “We may face difficulties and political setbacks, but we always find a way to bounce back,” Mohammed stated.

He further highlighted the unity within the North-east, affirming that the region remains cohesive amidst the turmoil within the party.

Damagum’s Visit and Call for Strong Leadership

During his visit, Mr. Damagum explained that his purpose was to discuss pressing PDP issues with Governor Mohammed and other leaders from the North-east. He commended the region’s support for his leadership and reaffirmed their shared commitment to resolving the ongoing crisis.

Additionally, Mr. Damagum urged Nigerians to be more discerning when selecting leaders for the 2027 general elections, particularly in light of the hardships caused by current government policies under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Background on the PDP Crisis

The PDP has been embroiled in a leadership crisis that has led to the formation of two rival factions within the party’s National Working Committee (NWC). These factions have been issuing conflicting statements, further deepening the divide.

On Friday, one faction suspended Mr. Damagum, replacing him with Yayari Mohammed as the new Acting National Chairperson. The same faction also suspended the PDP National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, citing alleged anti-party activities linked to the political crisis in Rivers State. Meanwhile, another faction loyal to Damagum suspended two other party members, Debo Ologunagba (National Publicity Secretary) and Kamaldeen Ajibade (National Legal Adviser).

The PDP Board of Trustees has called for both factions to cease hostilities and return to the status quo in an effort to stabilize the party.

Mr. Damagum has held the acting chairmanship since 2023, following the suspension of former National Chairperson Iyorchia Ayu. However, his tenure has been marred by accusations of anti-party activities, leading to multiple attempts to remove him, which he narrowly survived earlier this year.

Despite these challenges, Mr. Damagum enjoys the support of some governors, including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, allowing him to retain his position amid the ongoing turbulence.
