The Peoples Democratic Party convenes an emergency meeting to resolve internal disputes and leadership challenges, as calls for resignations and suspensions escalate.
Amid rising tensions and a deepening PDP internal crisis, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum has called for an emergency meeting to address the party’s ongoing leadership challenges. Since Umar Damagum took over as the acting National Chairman following the court-ordered removal of Senator Iyorchia Ayu, dissatisfaction among party leaders has mounted, with growing calls for his resignation.
The indecisiveness of Damagum has further complicated the PDP internal crisis, especially in Rivers State, where tensions have escalated between Governor Sim Fubara and former Governor Nyesom Wike. These divisions have prompted swift reactions within the party, with the National Working Committee (NWC) at the center of the conflict.
In a surprising turn of events, Damagum’s faction, through the National Director of Publicity, Chinwe Nnorom, announced the suspension of National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN) for alleged insubordination, fueling the PDP internal crisis further. Shortly after, Ologunagba’s faction responded by suspending Damagum and National Secretary Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, appointing National Treasurer Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the acting National Chairman.
As the PDP internal crisis continues, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, who chairs the PDP Governors Forum, has urged for calm and called on the party’s leadership to restore unity. Many within the party now consider forming a caretaker committee to guide the PDP through this turbulent period and to organize an elective national convention in 2025.
This ongoing PDP internal crisis has caused concern among key party stakeholders, and the upcoming emergency meeting aims to tackle these issues head-on. The party must find a solution soon, as ongoing litigation and leadership disputes threaten to weaken its unity.
