Senate President Akpabio Urges Nigerians to Seize Any Opportunity of Free Food Amid Economic Crisis

Amidst soaring prices and economic challenges, Senate President Godswill Akpabio encourages Nigerians to take advantage of free food where available

In a bid to address the growing economic crisis, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged Nigerians to seize opportunities amid the economic crisis by taking advantage of any free food they come across. This statement, made during a Senate plenary session, comes at a time when many Nigerians are facing heightened financial strain, with the removal of fuel subsidies and rising inflation rates making daily survival difficult.

Akpabio’s comments, which were followed by laughter among his colleagues, were captured in a video that has since sparked reactions. His advice to seize opportunities amid economic crisis reflects the reality of the country’s current economic situation, which has been exacerbated by recent government policies.

The removal of fuel subsidies under President Bola Tinubu’s administration has led to skyrocketing fuel prices, with some areas now seeing petrol prices surpassing N1,000 per litre. This is part of the government’s effort to reduce financial pressure on the state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). The Senate President’s advice to help themselves wherever possible aligns with these tough economic conditions, where citizens are being forced to adapt to rising costs.

This isn’t the first time Akpabio has made such remarks. In July, during a conference organized by the Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities, Youths, and Women Group in Port Harcourt, he joked about Nigerians protesting against economic hardship while lawmakers, including himself, would be “eating.” His repeated calls for citizens to seize opportunities amid economic crisis highlight the ongoing struggle many are facing in light of these difficult times.
