Nigeria Plunged Into Darkness as National Grid Collapses Again

Widespread blackout reported after another national grid collapse, with power disruptions across several states

Nigeria has once again been plunged into darkness following a collapse of the national grid on Monday, October 14, 2024. This latest grid failure has resulted in widespread power outages across the country, disrupting daily activities and adding to the existing challenges faced by citizens.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) confirmed the incident through a statement issued by its spokesperson, Emeka Ezeh. According to Ezeh, the grid collapsed at 18:48 hours, causing a total blackout across the company’s service areas.

“The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) wishes to inform our esteemed customers of a general system collapse that occurred at 18:48 hours today, October 14, 2024,” the statement read. “This has resulted in the loss of power supply currently being experienced across the EEDC network.”

Ezeh further explained that the power disruption affected customers in the states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo, as all interface stations managed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) were knocked offline.

“We are on standby awaiting further details from the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo, regarding the cause of the collapse and when we can expect the restoration of supply,” Ezeh added.

Similarly, Eko Distribution Company (EKEDC) also confirmed the national grid collapse in a statement, informing its customers of the outage.

“There was a system collapse at 18:48 hours, which has led to a loss of power supply across our network,” EKEDC announced. “We are working with our partners for a speedy restoration of the grid and will keep our customers updated as soon as power is restored.”

The incident caused significant power disruptions across multiple regions, with reports indicating that electricity supply was interrupted around 6:50 pm on Monday. This is not the first time Nigeria has experienced such grid collapses in recent months. In August 2024, the grid experienced a partial failure, and another collapse occurred in July.

According to data from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the national grid has collapsed approximately 227 times over the past 14 years, raising concerns about the stability and reliability of the country’s power infrastructure.

This latest grid failure comes at a time when Nigerians are grappling with increased electricity tariffs, which were hiked by 240 percent in April. The tariff hike has compounded the economic hardship faced by many citizens, making these frequent power outages even more frustrating.

As efforts are underway to restore power, many Nigerians are once again left in the dark, with businesses and households forced to rely on alternative sources of energy.
