73% of Abia Residents Exposed to Faecal Contaminated Water — Study

A WASHNORM study reveals that most Abia residents consume water contaminated with faecal matter, posing serious health risks

A recent study has revealed that 73% of Abia residents are consuming faecal contaminated water, leading to significant health concerns. The study, conducted by the Water Sanitation and Hygiene National Outcome Routine Mapping (WASHNORM), highlights the alarming state of water quality in Abia, putting a large portion of the population at risk.
The prevalence of faecal contaminated water in Abia is largely due to poor sanitation practices, including open defecation by 2% of the population. This practice, combined with improperly placed boreholes near sewage systems, has contributed to the widespread contamination of water sources across the state.
Experts are urging immediate action to address the dangers of faecal contaminated water in Abia, stressing the need for better sanitation infrastructure and increased public awareness. Handwashing with soap and clean water remains a vital preventive measure against the spread of waterborne diseases in the region.
