Akpabio Refutes Claims of DSS Invasion of National Assembly Over Impeachment Rumors

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed reports alleging that the Department of State Services (DSS) invaded the National Assembly due to purported impeachment moves by lawmakers. During Wednesday’s plenary session, Akpabio informed the Senate that he had been made aware of these reports but branded them as false.

He emphasized that there were no impeachment discussions or controversies within the upper legislative chamber, stating that the news circulating was entirely fabricated. Akpabio expressed concern over the rise of misinformation, especially through online platforms, which he believes are increasingly dominated by fake news.

“There is no limit to what online publications can fabricate. This is total fake news. There has been no impeachment of principal officers, and we are all here in the National Assembly without any controversial issues,” Akpabio stated. He added that artificial intelligence (AI) may have been used to push the fake news for traffic, further criticizing the trend of sensationalism in the media.

In response to the situation, Akpabio referred the issue to the Senate Committee on Special Duties, which has been tasked with investigating the reports. The committee is expected to present its findings within 24 hours.
