Dr. Philips Nto, a former Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development in Abia State, has expressed frustration over the endless EFCC investigations that have targeted him for nearly a decade. Despite being under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) since 2015, no formal charges have been brought against him.
The former commissioner, now a lecturer at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, has appealed to the Attorney General of the Federation to review his case, questioning why the endless EFCC investigations have persisted without resolution. He emphasized his willingness to face any charges if warranted, yet he continues to be summoned without clarification of the accusations.
Nto recently received another last-minute invitation to appear at the EFCC’s Abuja office, giving him less than a day to prepare. Frustrated by the timing and the lack of transparency in the investigation, he requested to report to the Enugu office instead, but his request was denied. He shared concerns about the endless EFCC investigations and their toll on his personal and professional life, especially the recurring end-of-year summons.
Nto challenged the commission to either file formal charges or conclude the investigation. He reiterated his innocence and transparency during his time as commissioner, asserting that his record is clean and that he has always complied with EFCC requests. He voiced concerns over what he sees as unnecessary threats to his safety despite his cooperation throughout the endless EFCC investigations.
Urging EFCC Chairman Ola Olukayode to investigate the conduct of his officers, Nto called for adherence to due process, noting that the current approach undermines democratic principles. He emphasized the need for the EFCC to operate within the bounds of the law, ensuring fairness and transparency in all its actions.
