Sanwo-Olu Announces Lagos State’s New Minimum Wage of N85,000

Governor Sanwo-Olu reveals Lagos State will implement an N85,000 minimum wage, surpassing the federal benchmark of N70,000

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced that Lagos State will implement a new minimum wage of N85,000 for its workers. This significant Lagos minimum wage increase was disclosed during a recent interview on Channels TV, where the governor discussed various policies aimed at improving workers’ welfare.

During the interview, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted that the new wage structure had been agreed upon following discussions with labor unions. “It’s not about competition,” he emphasized, “but about what we can afford and our capacity.” This Lagos minimum wage increase comes shortly after the federal government set the national minimum wage at N70,000.

Sanwo-Olu’s announcement positions Lagos State as one of the few regions offering a higher wage than the federal government’s standard, reflecting its stronger economic capacity. The decision was welcomed by many, as the Lagos minimum wage increase seeks to improve the livelihoods of public sector workers in Nigeria’s most populous state.
