The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has acknowledged Julius Abure as the legitimate leader of the Labour Party, following recent legal rulings and internal resolutions
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed Julius Abure as the legitimate chairman of the Labour Party, effectively putting an end to months of internal disputes within the party. This confirmation was communicated through a letter from INEC’s Secretary, Mrs. Rose Oriaran-Anthony, addressed to Julius Abure and Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, extending an invitation to both leaders to participate in the commission’s consultative meeting with political parties in Abuja.
This decision follows the October 8, 2024, ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which upheld the Labour Party’s national convention held in March of the same year. Justice Emeka Nwite declared the convention, held in Nnewi, Anambra State, as lawful and compliant with Nigeria’s political framework. As part of the judgment, INEC was directed to recognize the leadership of Julius Abure and his National Working Committee.
Speaking to the press after the consultative meeting, Labour Party National Secretary, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, called for unity within the party. He encouraged members to support Julius Abure as the Labour Party chairman, stating, “With leadership matters now settled, it’s crucial for every party member to rally around the Abure leadership. This was a family issue, and we are moving forward as a stronger, united party.”
Abure’s leadership had been previously challenged by some party stakeholders, leading to his controversial removal. However, this latest recognition by INEC is expected to reinforce his position and bring stability to the party.
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, had earlier commented on the leadership change, noting it was made in accordance with the party’s constitution. It remains to be seen how Obi and other senior figures in the party will react to this final resolution. The party now looks ahead to rebuilding trust and focusing on its political objectives moving forward.
