Energy Commission to Hold Public Inquiry into Recurring Grid Failures

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is set to probe the frequent grid collapses and outages across the country through a public hearing

The NERC public hearing on grid collapses is set to address the recurring power outages that have impacted several states across Nigeria. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) aims to investigate the immediate and underlying causes behind these frequent grid failures through a transparent public inquiry.

In a statement released recently, NERC expressed concerns over the rising number of grid collapses, which have reversed many of the improvements made in infrastructure and grid stability. According to NERC, an initial report traced the most recent outage to a transformer explosion at the Jebba transmission station, leading to a cascade of power plant shutdowns.

To address these issues, the NERC public hearing on grid collapses will be held soon, with the date and venue to be announced. Stakeholders and the general public are encouraged to participate in the discussions, which will explore long-term solutions to prevent future disruptions. The ongoing efforts to unbundle the System Operator from the Transmission Company of Nigeria are also expected to enhance grid management.

Through the NERC public hearing on grid collapses, authorities hope to bring more discipline into the system and optimize investments to secure Nigeria’s energy future.
