Defence Headquarters Debunks Appointment of Acting Army Chief Amid COAS Leave

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters has clarified that no senior officer has been appointed as Acting Chief of Army Staff while General Lagbaja is on leave

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has firmly denied appointing an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), clarifying that no such designation exists within the military structure. This rebuttal follows widespread speculation that an officer had been temporarily appointed during the leave of the current COAS, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, who has been on a scheduled break since September. Despite these rumors, the DHQ stressed that there is no acting Chief of Army Staff, reaffirming that General Lagbaja remains fully in command.

The reports of an acting Chief of Army Staff appointed by the Defence Headquarters were fueled by ongoing rumors surrounding General Lagbaja’s health. Speculations intensified after unverified reports of his death began circulating. The Army Headquarters swiftly dispelled these rumors, asserting that the COAS is alive and in good health. Following this, additional claims emerged, suggesting that the DHQ had appointed another senior officer as an acting COAS, which the DHQ has categorically denied.

In a statement issued by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, it was reiterated that there is “no acting Chief of Army Staff appointed by the DHQ,” and that the military remains professionally structured to handle all duties seamlessly. Brigadier General Gusau also clarified that while General Lagbaja is on leave, Major General Abdulsalam Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, is ensuring that all standard operational protocols are followed and routine briefs are provided to the COAS.

The DHQ has also warned the public against spreading false rumors, calling for restraint. These rumors, particularly regarding the alleged appointment of an acting Chief of Army Staff, have created unnecessary tension, prompting the DHQ to remind media outlets and the public to verify information before dissemination.

Additionally, the Defence Headquarters responded to calls for military intervention in Nigeria’s government, especially after a viral video surfaced showing individuals calling for a military takeover. Brigadier General Gusau emphasized that the military remains loyal to the administration of President Bola Tinubu, stressing that such calls for intervention are not only unconstitutional but also treasonous.

General Lagbaja, according to the DHQ, is expected to resume his duties shortly after his leave. The Defence Headquarters has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining stability and order, with all senior officers performing their responsibilities as stipulated by the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
