Bode George, the former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the South-West region, has voiced his discontent regarding the recent actions of former Ekiti Governor Ayo Fayose and the Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike. Both have publicly aligned themselves with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), leading George to lament that their endorsements are damaging the PDP’s reputation in the eyes of Nigerian voters.
Disappointment Over Public Allegiance
In a recent appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, George did not hold back his criticism, noting that Fayose’s pledge of support for Governor Biodun Oyebanji and Wike’s declaration of loyalty to President Bola Tinubu signify a betrayal of the PDP. He expressed that such overt backing for the opposition party reflects poorly on the PDP and undermines its credibility.
“If it is true that former Governor Fayose openly rejected the party and said he is going to work for the APC governor, he has defined his direction,” George stated. He called for an investigation into Fayose’s actions within Ekiti State, suggesting that his behavior is inappropriate for a two-term governor who should remain loyal to his party.
Internal Conflict and Party Integrity
George’s frustration extends to Wike’s involvement as well, acknowledging the complexities of the current situation but emphasizing the need for internal resolution. He remarked, “I don’t agree with what he is doing now. As an elder of the party, it is degrading the PDP before the electorate.” He likened the party to a family, stressing that disputes should be addressed internally rather than airing grievances publicly.
Critique of the APC
Additionally, George did not shy away from criticizing the APC, asserting that even a struggling PDP is a superior choice compared to the ruling party, which he described as a coalition of “strange bedfellows.” He questioned the APC’s effectiveness in managing its affairs, particularly referencing the challenges faced by its leaders, such as Abdullahi Ganduje.
“Is the APC party better than us even with this crisis? Are they any better?” George asked, urging all factions within the PDP to transcend selfishness and pettiness to realign the party’s goals.
Conclusion
Bode George’s remarks highlight a significant rift within the PDP, illustrating the challenges the party faces as it attempts to navigate internal discord while maintaining its public image. As the political landscape evolves, the actions of leaders like Wike and Fayose will likely continue to be scrutinized, potentially shaping the future direction of the PDP and its electoral prospects.
