
Senate Deputy Leader Oyelola Ashiru calls on the NDLEA to take legal action against any individuals caught with illicit drugs in his home, dismissing allegations of interference
Senate Deputy Leader, Oyelola Ashiru, has urged the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to prosecute anyone apprehended in connection with illicit drugs found in his residence. This statement came in response to claims made by the NDLEA accusing the senator of attempting to interfere with ongoing drug-related investigations.
Speaking last Wednesday during a Senate debate on a bill proposing the establishment of a National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation, Senator Ashiru expressed strong support for the bill, highlighting the need for reforms in drug control. According to him, “The NDLEA is compromised and corrupt,” a statement that sparked controversy and led to accusations from the agency.
The NDLEA, through its Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, reacted to the senator’s comments by alleging that Ashiru’s remarks were driven by frustration over his inability to halt the arrest and trial of individuals found in possession of drugs at his house.
In a swift response, Senator Ashiru, through his special assistant Olaitan Adeyanju, issued a statement denying the allegations. “The NDLEA claims they discovered drugs in Senator Ashiru’s Ilorin house, but no clear information has been provided regarding which court these individuals were charged to,” Adeyanju stated.
