An investigative panel discloses how Bobrisky received unique treatment in prison, from a furnished private cell to personal amenities
An investigative panel set up by the Federal Government has revealed that popular cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, received special privileges while serving a six-month prison sentence. These privileges included access to a furnished single cell, a personal errand runner, and various amenities like a refrigerator and television, the panel disclosed on Monday.
The panel, formed three weeks ago by Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, was tasked with investigating allegations that Bobrisky served his jail term outside prison walls. These claims surfaced following a voice note shared by controversial critic Martins Otse (aka VeryDarkMan), in which Bobrisky allegedly boasted about bribing officials from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to dismiss money laundering charges against him.
However, the panel’s report, led by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, cleared Bobrisky of the allegation that he did not serve his time in custody. The investigation found no evidence to support claims that Bobrisky avoided jail time.
The report did, however, highlight irregularities in Bobrisky’s prison transfers and documentation. It was revealed that Bobrisky’s transfer between different prison facilities was poorly documented, with the required paperwork only being completed months later and backdated.
The panel also uncovered that Bobrisky received preferential treatment while in custody, both at the Medium and Maximum Security Custodial Centres in Kirikiri, Lagos. These privileges included a furnished single cell with a humidifier, regular family visits, self-feeding, and the assignment of an inmate to assist him with errands.
The report raised concerns over whether these special privileges were financially motivated, suggesting that corruption may have played a role in Bobrisky’s treatment. The panel recommended further investigation to determine if correctional officers were bribed to provide these benefits.
Additionally, the panel called for the establishment of clear guidelines to prevent discriminatory treatment of inmates based on their socio-economic status in the future.
As the investigation continues, questions remain about the integrity of the correctional system and how privileges are distributed among inmates.
