Legal action emerges amid party tensions ahead of the scheduled NEC meeting
Imam Auwal, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has approached the federal high court in Zamfara, seeking an injunction to prevent party officials from postponing the upcoming National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which is set for October 24.
In a suit filed on Tuesday, Auwal is requesting that the court issues a restraining order against the PDP (the first defendant), its officials, agents, and any affiliated individuals from altering the date of the NEC meeting until the matter is resolved in court. The suit specifies that no other meeting held on different dates should be recognized as the official 99th NEC Meeting.
Additionally, Auwal is calling for a court directive to prohibit the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) from acknowledging Ali Odefa, who has been suspended as the national vice chair for the southeast, as a member. He is also urging the court to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from engaging with the PDP until a substantive national chairman is appointed.
The court has yet to make a ruling on this matter, which surfaces during a period of significant internal strife within the PDP. Some members are pushing for Umar Damagum, the party’s acting national chair, to resign, while others support his continuation in the role. The NEC is expected to address Damagum’s situation during the upcoming meeting.
