Major changes in the Federal Executive Council as the Ministry of Niger Delta and Ministry of Sports Development are scrapped, with several ministries consolidated
In a bold move aimed at streamlining Nigeria’s governance, President Tinubu merges ministries as part of a Federal Executive Council (FEC) decision, eliminating two key ministries. The Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of Sports Development have been scrapped, with their roles redistributed to newly formed or existing government bodies.
According to Bayo Onanuga, the president’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, who disclosed this on his official X handle, the changes were implemented following a high-level FEC meeting in Abuja. Under the new structure, a Ministry of Regional Development will be established, tasked with overseeing all regional development commissions, including those serving the Niger Delta, North West, North East, and South West regions.
The role of the Ministry of Sports Development will now be handled by the National Sports Commission, marking a significant shift in how the country manages its sporting affairs. Additionally, President Tinubu approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy, signaling a strategic consolidation aimed at boosting efficiency and reducing redundancy in government operations.
These restructuring efforts by President Tinubu, which include the merging of ministries, reflect his administration’s drive for improved governance, fiscal responsibility, and enhanced coordination across key sectors.
