Governor Hyacinth Alia suspends Benue’s Attorney General, Bemsen Mnyim, for joining a lawsuit challenging the EFCC’s legality without approval
Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia has suspended the state’s Attorney General, Bemsen Mnyim, for joining a lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) without prior approval. The suspension was announced during a press conference held on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, in Makurdi, the state capital.
Governor Alia explained that Mnyim acted unilaterally by joining Benue to a suit challenging the legality of the EFCC, alongside Kogi and 15 other states. According to the governor, no authorization was given for this move, which contradicts his administration’s anti-corruption stance.
Alia emphasized that his government is committed to fighting corruption in the state, with assistance from the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). “How can I now challenge these watchdogs after relying on them to hold accountable those who looted our state?” the governor questioned.
The governor expressed his disappointment with the Attorney General’s actions, stressing the need for proper consultation before making such significant legal decisions. “No matter the urgency of the issue, due consultations must be made, especially on sensitive matters like this. I never granted permission for the state to be involved in this case,” Alia stated.
As a result, Mnyim has been suspended indefinitely, pending further clarification of his actions. The governor reiterated his firm stance on transparency and accountability in governance.
The lawsuit in question, originally filed by Kogi State, involves 16 state governments challenging the constitutionality of the laws establishing the EFCC and similar federal agencies, including the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU). The Supreme Court has reserved judgment on the consolidated case, which involves states such as Benue, Anambra, Cross River, and others.
