Nigerians urged to report distribution companies that demand consumers purchase transformers, poles, and cables
In a recent reminder to Nigerians, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) emphasized that DisCos must supply transformers and cables—a duty the Commission expects all electricity distribution companies to fulfill. NERC’s announcement aims to ensure that consumers are not burdened with purchasing critical infrastructure like transformers, poles, and cables, which fall under the responsibility of the DisCos.
NERC’s statement, shared on October 26, urged consumers to report any distribution company that tries to shift this obligation onto them. According to NERC, if any DisCo requests that consumers buy items such as transformers or poles, they should report the issue using a designated email and phone contact. NERC’s intervention is part of a broader commitment to ensuring that DisCos must supply transformers and cables, a standard set by regulatory guidelines to protect consumer rights and enhance accountability.
To assist in reporting such cases, NERC has provided a contact line for complaints, encouraging consumers to alert the regulatory body to any infractions.
