Uber driver Stephen Abuwatseya recounts hours-long detention at a police station following an altercation with Abia lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh
Following a recent incident involving Abia House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh, Uber driver Stephen Abuwatseya has shared his account of being detained by police officers after an altercation at Ikwechegh’s residence.
In a statement made to online commentator VeryDarkMan, Abuwatseya explained that Ikwechegh called in police officers, who escorted him to the station after the lawmaker expressed anger over the driver recording their exchange. The driver described being held at the station without access to his phone and left behind the counter for over two hours while police conducted an investigation at Ikwechegh’s residence in Maitama.
The driver added that upon returning to the station, the investigating officer questioned his decision to record the encounter. Abuwatseya noted that Ikwechegh appeared at the station during his detention, allegedly using dismissive language. He was eventually released around 3:00 am, though his vehicle remained impounded at the station.
The incident has raised public concerns about the treatment of everyday service workers and the influence of officials during disputes.
