Rivers Governor Fubara Expresses How He Was Ambushed With Peace Deal Negotiated By President

Siminalayi Fubara recounts unexpected betrayal amid efforts to stabilize Rivers State

In a recent address during a non-denominational thanksgiving event in Port Harcourt, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara disclosed that he was “ambushed” in a peace deal meant to resolve the political turmoil in Rivers. Governor Fubara, reflecting on the crisis and subsequent peace accord, described how he realized that some members of the state’s House of Assembly were plotting against him, despite signing a peace agreement to restore stability. This development marked a turning point for the Governor, who reiterated his commitment to ensuring Rivers’ continued progress.

Governor Fubara peace deal ambush was not a result of actions by the initiator, President Bola Tinubu, but rather from individuals within his own camp, he explained. He noted that while the peace deal initially seemed to offer hope, certain members exploited it as a cover for a hidden agenda. As he recognized this betrayal, Governor Fubara chose not to allow himself to be manipulated by those who, he said, had little interest in real peace.

Criticizing lawmakers loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, Fubara accused them of reneging on their promises. “They claim to be honorable, yet fail to follow through on the peace commitments,” he stated, underscoring his own efforts to uphold the deal.

Fubara expressed gratitude to prominent Rivers leaders and other stakeholders who have steadfastly supported his administration. “I stand here today because of each of you who helped resist the adversities we faced,” he remarked, adding that the events of October 30, 2023, serve as a testament to their resilience.

Despite these challenges, Governor Fubara stressed that his administration remains united, with continued progress across various government sectors. “They doubted we’d last a week, but here we are a year later, intact and moving forward,” he declared, pointing to the successful appointment of local government officials and the active rollout of development projects. The Governor’s assurance of transparency and accountability has earned commendation, a milestone he sees as proof of his administration’s strength.

As Governor Fubara moves forward, he emphasized the triumph of his administration over the naysayers, affirming that, by focusing on Rivers’ development, they have become the ultimate winners. His ongoing priority, he says, is to foster peace and stability in Rivers, grounded in the support of those committed to seeing the state thrive.
