In a bid to safeguard Nigeria’s vital road infrastructure, the Federal Government has announced plans to sanction vehicle owners whose actions lead to the destruction of public roads. This initiative comes as part of a broader effort to preserve the country’s transport networks, which are crucial for economic and social development.
Bello Goronyo, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Works, issued a stern warning during his inspection of road repairs along the 58-kilometre Sokoto-Illela road in Sokoto on Tuesday. Goronyo emphasized that the government allocates substantial resources annually for road rehabilitation and maintenance, and it would not tolerate any vehicle owners who contribute to the deterioration of these roads through reckless driving or improper usage.
He revealed that a new initiative called “Operation Safeguard Our Roads” would soon be launched. This initiative aims to engage stakeholders in ensuring the protection of road infrastructure across the country. Goronyo also called on all citizens, as well as local and state governments, to play a role in reporting individuals who cause road obstructions or damage.
The Minister stressed the importance of road infrastructure in supporting Nigeria’s socioeconomic growth. “Our roads are public assets meant to enhance the quality of transportation, promoting smoother and safer travel for all Nigerians,” he noted.
Further demonstrating the government’s commitment to improving road safety and public welfare, Goronyo inaugurated solar-powered streetlights installed by the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) at the Sultan Abubakar International Airport and surrounding areas. These lights are seen as vital for nighttime security and public safety, particularly in areas previously considered dangerous due to poor visibility.
FERMA’s managing director, Emeka Agbasi, lauded the Minister’s dedication to fulfilling President Bola Tinubu’s vision for transformative development through the “Renewed Hope” agenda, focusing on the betterment of national infrastructure.
As the government moves forward with these plans, vehicle owners are urged to adhere to road safety guidelines and avoid engaging in actions that could harm public roads, as strict penalties are expected for violators.
