House of Reps Summons Nigerian Military Chiefs Over Miyetti Allah President’s Detention

The Nigerian House of Representatives has officially summoned the country’s top military chiefs to provide explanations over the detention of Bello Bodejo, President of the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore herders’ union. This decision came during a heated plenary session where lawmakers expressed concern about the alleged infringement of Bodejo’s fundamental rights.

The House directed Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, to appear before relevant committees on Army, Human Rights, and Justice to address the circumstances surrounding Bodejo’s arrest.

Background of the Arrest

Bodejo was reportedly taken into custody in Maliya, Nasarawa State, by officers of the Nigerian Army’s 117 Battalion. According to sources, the operation was conducted without prior court orders or official invitations, raising concerns about the legality of his detention. It is believed the incident stemmed from a confrontation involving herders and a retired army general in Tudun Wada, Nasarawa State.

House Intervention

The motion to summon the military chiefs was raised by Mansur Soro, a lawmaker from Bauchi State. Soro argued that Bodejo’s prolonged detention—without arraignment—violates sections 34, 35, and 36 of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the right to dignity, liberty, and fair trial.

“The arrest and continued detention of Bello Bodejo without due process is not only a breach of his fundamental rights but also a dangerous precedent,” Soro emphasized.

Call for Immediate Action

Following a unanimous voice vote, the House urged the military to ensure Bodejo’s immediate release and issue an apology for the violation of his constitutional rights. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who presided over the session, directed that the military chiefs appear before the committees to clarify their actions.

What Happens Next?

The summoned military leaders are expected to appear before the House committees next week. Lawmakers aim to investigate the circumstances of Bodejo’s arrest and ensure compliance with legal protocols going forward.
