EFCC Chairman Olukoyede Faces Imprisonment Risk for Alleged Contempt of Court

A Federal High Court in Yenagoa has warned that EFCC Chairman Olanipekun Olukoyede risks imprisonment due to his alleged contempt of court. This stems from his refusal to adhere to a court ruling involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and two entities: Bliss Multinational Perfection and Baraza Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited, led by Oyinmiebi Bribena.

Justice Isa H. Dashen had previously ruled that the EFCC should not seize properties belonging to Bliss Multinational Perfection and Bribena, as they were not deemed proceeds of crime. The judge also deemed the EFCC’s actions, including the unlawful seizure and sealing of these properties, as illegal.

The court’s decision included ordering the EFCC to refrain from placing post-no-debt liens on Bribena’s bank accounts, a move which was also declared unlawful. Additionally, the EFCC was permanently restrained from any form of harassment or detention related to the civil dispute between Baraza Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited and its members.

In the judgment, the court awarded N10,000,000 in exemplary damages against the EFCC for the unlawful actions taken against Bliss Multinational and Bribena.

EFCC boss Olukoyede risks imprisonment if he continues to disregard the court’s orders, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing legal battle.
