Governor Otti Explains Silence on Kalu’s 2027 Prediction

Abia State Governor Addresses Controversy Surrounding Deputy Speaker’s Forecast

Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti has clarified his decision to withhold comment on Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu’s assertion that the Labour Party (LP) would be replaced by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections. Otti’s explanation comes in the wake of heightened political rhetoric and controversy surrounding Kalu’s forecast.

During a press briefing at the Government House in Umuahia, Otti addressed the reasons behind his silence. He emphasized that predicting future political outcomes is beyond his capability, asserting, “It would be imprudent for me to speculate on future events. I chose not to respond to Kalu’s statement because I believe that ultimate authority rests with God, not with us. It is not within my purview to determine what will transpire in 2027.”

Otti’s restraint contrasts sharply with the reaction of APC members in the state. Chief Okezie Usim, a prominent APC figure and Acting Chairman in Bende council area, has criticized the Labour Party for its response to Kalu’s comments. Usim argued that the reaction to Kalu’s prediction highlights a double standard in the political discourse. He pointed out that similar predictions made by the Labour Party’s Lagos State governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, had not elicited such an intense backlash.

Usim stated, “The comparison between Kalu’s remarks and Rhodes-Vivour’s statements reveals a troubling inconsistency. While Rhodes-Vivour’s ambition to challenge the APC in Lagos is met with indifference, Kalu’s comments about Abia are met with hostility. This disparity underscores a lack of tolerance within the Labour Party.”

He further argued that attacking Kalu for his prediction is counterproductive, suggesting that it reflects an underlying bitterness and a lack of democratic spirit. Usim called for a more measured approach to political predictions, emphasizing that political discourse should accommodate diverse viewpoints and expressions of ambition.

The political landscape in Abia State remains charged as both parties navigate their strategies and public statements in the lead-up to the 2027 elections. Governor Otti’s decision to remain neutral highlights his focus on governance rather than engaging in speculative political debates. Meanwhile, the APC’s stance illustrates ongoing tensions and the highly charged nature of Nigerian politics.
