Peter Obi Open to Vice Presidency if a Superior Candidate Emerges

Peter Obi expresses readiness to consider a vice-presidential role if he identifies a candidate with greater potential for Nigeria’s progress.

In a recent exclusive interview with New Central TV, monitored by SaharaReporters, Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-Governor of Anambra State, discussed his potential role in the 2027 general election. Obi revealed his openness to the vice-presidential position, contingent upon finding a candidate who he believes would perform better in leading Nigeria forward.

Obi’s statements underscore his primary focus on Nigeria’s progress rather than personal ambition. “I am not desperate to become Nigerian President,” Obi explained. “What I am truly passionate about is seeing Nigeria thrive. If I come across someone who is more capable of achieving that, I am ready to consider being Vice President.”

The former governor also addressed ongoing discussions about potential political mergers, emphasizing his commitment to the Labour Party while remaining open to alliances if they align with his vision for Nigeria. “I will stay with the Labour Party, but I am open to negotiations with other political figures if their goals resonate with mine,” Obi added.

However, Obi’s remarks come amidst controversy within the Labour Party. Recently, the National Working Committee (NWC), led by Julius Abure, has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the National Security Adviser (NSA) to investigate allegations of campaign fund mismanagement involving Obi, activist Aisha Yesufu, Pastor Itua Ighodalo, and Afenifere leaders.

At a press briefing, the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, accused Obi and others of diverting over N12 billion and $15 million meant for the 2023 presidential campaign. Arabambi labeled Obi a “political merchant” and criticized recent defenses by Yesufu as attempts to obscure the truth. The allegations also extend to Afenifere leaders, who are accused of holding significant funds meant for the campaign.

As the political landscape evolves, Obi’s readiness to assume a vice-presidential role reflects his commitment to Nigeria’s future, despite the current controversies surrounding his campaign finances.
