NNPP Merges with Labour Party in Abia as Governor Otti Welcomes Defectors

In a major political move, the NNPP leadership and structure in Abia State join forces with the Labour Party, pledging support for Governor Alex Otti’s administration

In a significant political shift, the entire leadership and structure of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Abia State have merged with the ruling Labour Party (LP). This strategic move was confirmed in a formal event where the NNPP’s key figures and stakeholders declared their alignment with the LP, signaling a unified approach to governance in Abia.

While officially receiving the defectors, Abia State Governor and Labour Party leader, Dr. Alex Otti, assured them of equal opportunities within the party. He emphasized that the Labour Party is an inclusive platform that treats all members fairly, regardless of when they joined.

“We don’t discriminate in the Labour Party, just as we don’t discriminate in government. Everyone is treated equally here,” Governor Otti stated. “Your joining today does not make you inferior to those who have been with us longer. If that were the case, people like me would never have had the chance to lead the party. In the Labour Party, everyone has equal rights.”

Governor Otti also expressed his gratitude to Dr. Ukpai Iro Ukpai, the NNPP’s 2023 gubernatorial candidate, for his consistent support of the current administration. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the lives of Abians, many of whom have faced long-standing hardships due to past mismanagement by previous governments.

One of the governor’s key announcements was the commencement of payments for salary arrears owed to various institutions across the state. He explained that nearly 18 billion naira in arrears, accumulated by past administrations, will be gradually paid off over the next year. The payments will begin this month with a monthly allocation of 1.5 billion naira.

“We’ve taken on the responsibility to address the salary arrears left by previous administrations. Starting this month, we will pay 1.5 billion naira monthly until the total of nearly 18 billion naira is cleared,” Otti stated. “Our priority remains the welfare of the people, not the interests of a few politicians.”

In speeches delivered during the event, Hon. Iheanacho Obioma, Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, and Emmanuel Oti, Acting State Chairman of the Labour Party, praised Governor Otti’s leadership. They highlighted the fact that under his guidance, the Labour Party has become a preferred choice for Abians, inspiring pride and confidence in the state’s future.

The NNPP’s 2023 gubernatorial candidate, Dr. Ukpai Iro Ukpai, and the party’s State Coordinator, Mr. David Urum, spoke on behalf of the defecting members. They formally announced the dissolution of the NNPP’s structure in Abia State and its merger with the Labour Party. Dr. Ukpai praised Governor Otti for redefining governance in the state, noting that his leadership style has positively impacted the lives of the people.

“Governor Alex Otti truly understands governance, and I’ve been following his work closely. Today, I’m here to solidify my support,” Dr. Ukpai stated. “The NNPP has officially moved into the Labour Party in Abia State. This isn’t just an ordinary defection; it’s a well-thought-out decision. We believe joining forces with Governor Otti is the best way to move Abia forward.”

The event concluded with the presentation of Labour Party flags to the new members, symbolizing their official integration into the party. The occasion attracted several government officials and NNPP candidates who ran for various positions in the 2023 general elections.

This merger of political forces in Abia marks a significant moment for the state’s political landscape, as the NNPP’s full support of the Labour Party strengthens Governor Otti’s position and reinforces his plans for development. Abians, hopeful for a better future, are witnessing the creation of a more unified political structure that aims to prioritize their welfare.
